I agree with you, but I just have a tendency to be suspicious when I read something that seems to, perhaps very subtly, downplay Jesus' teachings on heaven and hell and instead focus entirely on his teachings about our conduct in this life. I do believe that God cares more about our heart and our capacity for love than the particular tenants we hold, but I do think there is a limit where one's understanding of Christian doctrine could be so twisted that that person would go to hell, regardless of how loving that person was in life.
